20 Sets of 11kV OilImmersed Transformers Grid Transformation Project in Nigeria
Release Time: 20260407
Oilimmersed Transformers Project Background
Nigeria ranks as Africa’s largest economy with a huge population and strong electricity demand for residential and industrial sectors. However, its grid infrastructure remains weak. Most local transformers have operated for over 20 years, suffering from aging hardware, insufficient capacity, excessive losses and frequent breakdowns. As Nigeria’s largest city and economic hub, Lagos faces acute power shortages and poor voltage quality. Largescale blackouts and voltage fluctuations frequently occur, severely disrupting residents’ daily life and industrial manufacturing activities.
In early 2025, the National Electric Power Company of Nigeria (NEPA) kicked off the Lagos State Distribution Network Upgrade Project. The project planned to replace 200 old transformers to boost distributionnetwork capacity and reliability and improve local power conditions. As a key governmentled livelihood initiative, it set strict requirements for equipment quality, delivery leadtime and aftersales service.
With our rich project experience across African markets (we have completed multiple gridrenovation assignments in 12 African countries), IECcompliant product quality and complete aftersales service framework, Jinma Electric won one tender lot. We took charge of supplying 20 sets of 11 kV oilimmersed distribution transformers to cover residential, industrial and commercial distribution needs across three zones within Lagos State.
Program Design and Adaptability
Considering Nigeria’s practical conditions including severe gridvoltage swings, large load peaksandvalleys, limited onsite construction resources and low local O&M proficiency, our inhouse technical team customdeveloped the S11MRL threedimensional woundcore oilimmersed transformer for this tender. This unit integrates energysaving performance, stable output, easy maintenance and antitheft features, fully matching local gridrenovation requirements. Its core advantages are listed below:
3D WoundCore Technology: Compared with traditional laminated cores, our continuousrolling 3D woundcore eliminates core seams and delivers uniform magnetic circuits. Noload loss drops by 20 % and noload current reduces by 40 %, generating remarkable energy savings and cutting annual electricity expenditure for Lagos State while complying with local national energysaving policies. Meanwhile its compact layout reduces overall volume by 15 % versus conventional transformers, simplifying transportation and installation for narrow local construction spots.
Wide Voltage Adaptation: Rated at 11 kV with ±5 % tapadjustment capacity. It effectively counteracts heavy gridvoltage fluctuation across Nigeria, securing stable equipment operation and avoiding hardware damage or supply interruptions triggered by excessively high / low voltage.
AntiTheft Construction: To tackle prevalent local powertheft risks, we adopt fullyenclosed antitheft tank structures fitted with special security seals. Thickened steel tank plates defend against deliberate manmade destruction, lowering equipment loss and safety hazards.
MaintenanceFriendly Structure: We deploy a nearmaintenancefree design with extended transformeroil service cycles without frequent oil replacement. Clear visual components such as oillevel indicators and pressurerelief valves support local staff to conduct routine inspection and basic service, wellsuited for Nigeria’s limited onsite O&M capabilities.
Certification and Documentation
Nigeria enforces strict compliance rules for imported power equipment. All incoming hardware must satisfy IEC international standards and obtain SON certification issued by the Standards Organization of Nigeria; otherwise goods cannot clear customs or pass gridaccess acceptance. To guarantee smooth project rollout, we preprepared the full compliance document package:
Product Certifications: Our S11MRL transformer has passed IEC 60076 internationalstandard testing plus SON certification from the Nigerian Standards Organization. Complete certification paperwork proves full compliance with local Nigerian technical requirements.
Trade Paperwork: We prearranged certificates of origin, phytosanitary certificates, packing lists, commercial invoices and other full trade documentation to enable troublefree customs clearance.
Technical Documentation: Detailed Englishlanguage operation manuals, installation drawings, factory test reports and thirdparty test reports are delivered alongside goods. These materials support customer installation, commissioning and daily O&M while satisfying NEPA projectacceptance criteria.
Thanks to this advance document preparation, goods completed customs clearance within 24 hours after port arrival, preventing demurrage fees and laying solid foundations for onschedule project delivery.
Project Execution
In March 2025, the full batch of 20 transformers completed manufacturing and all required tests, and was shipped out from Guangzhou Port via direct sea freight toward Lagos Port. Fullchain logistics tracking guaranteed safe cargo arrival. Taking Nigeria’s constrained construction conditions and lessexperienced local O&M personnel into account, we made thorough preshipment preparations:
Equipment Labelling: Every unit carries clear bilingual ChineseEnglish marking including model number, capacity, voltage class and operating safety notes for easy identification and handling by local technicians.
Training Resources: We produced dedicated Englishlanguage onsite installationguidance videos covering mounting workflows, wiring procedures, routinecheck items and basic faulttroubleshooting. Materials were shared to the client ahead of shipment for prestudy.
AfterSales Commitment: Our professional technical team delivers roundtheclock remote support. Whenever installationorcommissioning issues emerge, our team responds and provides resolutions within 24 hours.
After cargo reached Lagos Port, our engineers remotely guided the local customer through installation and commissioning workflows. All 20 transformers finished mounting, wiring and commissioning within merely 10 days and were successfully energized.
Project Effectiveness and Customer Feedback
Following two consecutive months of stable field operation, all performance metrics meet original design targets, bringing tangible project outcomes:
Improved PowerSupply Reliability: Outage frequency across three Lagos districts decreased by 80 %, while voltage stability rose to 99 %. Chronic issues of voltage swing and frequent blackouts were resolved, greatly improving livingstandard conditions and industrial powersupply security.
Noticeable EnergySaving Outcomes: Compared with legacy oldmodel transformers, these 20 units save approximately USD 150,000 in annual electricity operating costs for the Nigerian power authority.
Simplified OnSite O&M: Robust stable performance paired with maintenancefree design cuts fieldservice workload significantly. Local operators can independently execute routine inspections and basic repairs supported by our guidance videos plus remote technical backup.
